Amusing or Irrelevant Facts...

The city of St. Petersburg, Russia, was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, as St. Petersburg. In 1914, at the beginning of World War I, Russian leaders felt that Petersburg was too German-sounding. So they changed the name to Petrograd to make it more Russian-sounding. Then, in 1924, the country's Communist leaders wanted to honor Vladimir I. Lenin. The city of Petrograd became Leningrad and was known as Leningrad until 1991 when the new Russian legislators renamed it back to St. Petersburg.
